Hawks vs. Doves:
The Vietnam War in 1965

Following the end of the Indochina War and the 1954 Geneva Conference, Vietnam was split along the 17th parallel into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Armed conflicts between the communist Northern and anti-communist Southern armies soon followed, marking the beginning of the Vietnam War. Despite the US’s continual support for South Vietnam, factors such as decreasing public support, corruption within the South Vietnamese government, and North Vietnam's unprecedented resilience are all beginning to contribute to an unfavorable outlook on the war. Two factions have begun to form within the US government: war hawks, who encourage the escalation of war efforts, and doves, who advocate that continued involvement will only worsen the situation. Set in November of 1965, delegates in this committee will act as members of Congress, split between the Senate and House of Representatives. The two legislative bodies will work independently of one another in separate rooms. As crucial members of the US Government, delegates must develop a well-thought-out resolution that addresses both the internal division within the government and a plan of action for dealing with the Vietnam War.

Senate Chair

Hey everyone! My name is Michael Chen and I will be your Chair for this committee! I’m a senior at Marriotts Ridge High School and I’ve been in Model UN since I was a sophomore. When I first started, our school had never hosted a conference before, so it’s exciting to see how far our club has come since then. Throughout all the conferences I’ve been to, I’ve always walked away with a positive experience, and I hope to leave you all with a similar feeling. I think that our topic this year for the Historical Crisis has room for tons of fun plots and surprises, so I’m excited to see how everything plays out! I look forward to seeing all of you on the day of the conference!

Senate Co-Chair

Welcome to RIDGEMUNCII! My name is Trijal Pinninti and I will be your co-chair! I joined Model UN as a freshman to have fun with my friends, but the club quickly became one of the most fun parts of my high school experience. Since then, I have attended and chaired numerous conferences. Model UN is truly a one of a kind experience and I hope you have a similar experience to mine! Model UN has always been special to me and I hope RIDGEMUNC gives you the same special memories!

House Chair

Hi delegates! My name is Erica Qin, and I am your Chair! I’m a rising senior at Marriotts Ridge High School and I’ve been a member of the Model UN program here for three years now. During my time in Model UN, I’ve competed in both regional and international conferences, working with delegates from all around the world to arrive at solutions for real world issues. As you continue your Model UN journey, I’m hoping that you will all learn to love this club as much as I do! I’m looking forward to seeing how all of you will embody the Model UN values of collaboration, creativity, and debate in order to arrive at a well thought out resolution for the Vietnam War situation of 1965.

House Co-Chair

My name is Hashem Alomar, and I am your co-chair! I’m a senior at Marriotts Ridge High School and have been a Model UN member since Freshman year. I've been hooked from the start and have attended a myriad of conferences both local and international. Model UN has always been a lot of fun to me and it really helped me get over my crippling fear of public speaking. I hope that you will all find a similar love for MUN and will all be able to find a solution to the topic at hand!
