DISEC: Autonomous Weapons Systems

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), also known as the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, is responsible for addressing global peace and security challenges through disarmament, arms control, and regulation of emerging threats. Created in 1945 to prevent the devastation of another world war, DISEC has shaped major international treaties, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Arms Trade Treaty. While it cannot enforce binding measures like the Security Council, DISEC provides a vital platform for inclusive debate, consensus-building, and standard-setting among all UN member states. Today, the committee faces urgent issues such as the rapid development of autonomous weapons, cyber warfare, and advanced military technologies. Its work is critical in balancing national security with humanitarian concerns, ensuring that advancements in warfare do not outpace international law or ethical frameworks. DISEC remains central to fostering cooperation and preventing destabilizing arms races worldwide.

Chair

Hey! My name is Ram Challagulla and I am currently a senior at Marriotts Ridge. I have been a part of Model UN since my freshman year in high school, but became active during my sophomore year. Through Model UN I have made many different connections, many of whom I am close friends with as well. Model UN has also helped me with my public speaking skills and confidence when in front of people. My favorite Model UN memory was NAIMUN LXII where I got to see what it is like to be surrounded by people who have years of Model UN experience such as myself, and while I was doing this I got to spend time with some of my closest friends at their last NAIMUN before they went to college. There are lots of opportunities within this committee to be creative and work with others to come to a resolution, whether you are new to Model UN or this is your 10th conference we encourage all of you to join us for this experience.

Co-Chair

Hello, my name is Anish Kovvuri. I am currently a junior at Marriotts Ridge and I will be your co-chair for this committee. I have been a part of Model UN since my freshman year and it has definitely been a very enjoyable experience. My favorite Model UN memory is UMUNC when I was goofing off with friends late at night in the hotel we were staying at. I’m interested in co-chairing this committee because autonomous weapons systems is a topic that requires well-debated, innovative ideas to mitigate issues regarding ethics, and global security.
