ECOSOC: Beneath the Waves: The Race for Minerals in the South China Sea
This committee tackles one of the most pressing geopolitical flashpoints in the world today: the fight for control over the South China Sea's waters, minerals, and shipping lanes. You'll be stepping into the shoes of nations and blocs with sharply competing interests — from claimant states asserting sovereignty over contested reefs and resources, to external powers determined to keep the sea's trade routes open, to a divided ASEAN struggling to speak with one voice. I'm especially looking forward to seeing how you navigate overlapping claims, build unlikely coalitions, and find common ground on an issue where the "right" answer has eluded diplomats and international courts for decades.

Chair
I’m Ruthvik Kuncha, a senior at Marriotts Ridge High School, and I’m super excited to be serving as your chair for RidgeMUNC V! Model UN, debate, and exploring international law have been incredible experiences for me, and I can't wait to share that energy with all of you. Outside of committee, you’ll usually find me staying active, keeping up with debate topics, or hanging out with friends. This committee will be tackling the complex, high-stakes fight for sovereignty and open waters in the South China Sea. I can’t wait to see the creative diplomacy and great debates you all bring to the table!
Co-Chair
Hello all! My name is Myeongjun “Matthew” Choi, and I will be your co-chair. I am a junior at Marriotts Ridge High School. I have been in Model UN since my sophomore year, where I climbed up rapidly and found my passion and voice in government and politics. No matter the rigor, no matter the competition, Model UN has been a joy that brought light into my passion and sound into my voice where new connections, innovating skills, and revolutionary ideas were born. Whether or not you are ready, be it your first, seventh, or seventy-seventh time doing Model UN, I strongly encourage you all to take a step out of your comfort zone and dominate this conference through diplomacy and debate!
